Pune: The police said that the driver of a container truck lost control due to suspicion that it was a brake, causing two deaths and seven injuries.

They said the accident happened at around 6pm on the Navale Bridge near Katraj Road. A police officer said: “Due to suspected brake failure, the driver of the container truck apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to continue to crash into other vehicles on the road.”

He said that four four-wheelers, two motorcycles and an auto rickshaw were hit by the container.

He added: “The driver of the auto rickshaw and one motorcyclist were killed, and the remaining seven were injured.”

The Sinhagad Road police have opened a case for investigation of the container driver.

“After the suspected brake failure, the heavy vehicle went on hitting vehicles on the road. At least eight vehicles were damaged. Two persons – one driver of a rickshaw and one biker – were killed. Seven more have sustained injuries of whom three are said to have sustained very serious injuries. Four others have minor injuries. A case is being registered against the driver of the heavy truck. An examination of the vehicle will also be conducted by officials from the Regional Transport Office to verify whether the claim of brake failure was right.” Said Sinhagad Road police station Inspector PR Waghmare.

In a similar accident, two people were injured in a multiple-vehicle collision on November 25.
