A 34-year-old woman committed suicide in Chinchwad after jumping from the fifth floor of a building. The police after preliminary investigation arrested the husband and in-laws of the woman on alleged dowry demands. A case has been lodged in Chinchwad police station for alleged abetting in the suicide. The accused as per sources demanded 25 lakhs from the deceased. The complaint was lodged by the 65-year-old father of the woman.
The woman worked in a tech company in Hinjewadi, while her husband was employed as a doctor in a leading Pune hospital. The family hailed from an upper-middle-class background.
The father of the deceased in a statement said, “After her body was rushed to a nearby hospital, the cops called my son. We immediately rushed to Pune from our native place. Continuous torture by repeated dowry demands from her in-laws, even after so many years of her marriage, compelled my daughter to take this extreme measure.” The father further said that at the time of the wedding, they were promised that the woman will be allowed to work but soon after they told her to prioritise the household over her job. He added that In 2017 after she gave birth to the couple’s son, the in-laws accused her of not caring for her child properly.
The additional police inspector of Chinchwad Police Station, Abhijit Jadhav said, “ We have booked the deceased’s husband and in-laws under section 306 (abetting suicide), 498A (woman being subjected to cruelty by husband or his close relative), 504 ( intentional insult to provoke breach of the peace) and 34 ( acts done by a group of people for the furtherance of a common goal) of the Indian Penal Code.”
The police have said that they will continue to investigate the case further, meanwhile, the husband has been arrested as the primary suspect of the case.
