Vishwakarma puja which is also known as Vishwakarma Jayanti in some places is celebrated every year in reverence of God Vishwakarma, the deity of architect and craft. It is often believed that it is Vishwakarma who had built the holy land of Dwarka, along with the Maya Sabha or the beautiful Palace of Illusions for the Pandav brothers. He also finds special mention in Rig Veda where he is credited as divine behind Sthapatya Veda, the science of architecture and mechanics.

According to the mythology, Lord Vishwakarma even crafted Indra’s, the king of all God’s Vajra.

Falling on the pious Kanya Sankranti day of the Hindu calendar, Vishwakarma puja is usually observed on September 17 annually. It is especially popular in the eastern parts of this country. This festival finds special recognition in states like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tripura, Odisha and Assam, also our neighbouring country Nepal celebrates it in a big way.

This festival holds special importance in factories, industrial and automobile sectors, as well as people workings as craftsman, artisans, carpenters, drivers and welders, are deeply connected to this festival.

Vishwakarma puja is performed on the very last day of the Bengali Bhadra month.

On the auspicious occasion of this festival, all the devotees worship and pray to God accompanied by his Vahan, the mammoth elephant. Workers and craftsmen even worship their machines, tools and instruments on this particular day. Many factories and shops dealing with machinery remain close. On this day of the Puja, the idol of the Lord of architecture is positioned in well-decorated marquees or on elated platforms like stage above the floors of various factories and shops, where the main puja rituals are performed. Following a  Yagya dedicated to the divine, a gourmet prasad is prepared and eaten by the worshippers.

In many places there is a wonderful tradition of flying colorful kites on the day of this puja.

 According to the Drik Panchang, this year Vishwakarma festival Sankranti falls on September 17 at dot 1:19 pm.
