Alleged Shiv Sena members beat up a 62-year-old retired navy officer Madan Sharma, in Mumbai on Friday, for forwarding a cartoon of chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on a WhatsApp group, according to PTI reports.

The retired navy officer forwarded a cartoon of Thackeray after which some alleged Shiv Sena members broke into his residence and hit him. Sharma sustained an eye injury and is receiving medical attention, a police officer said.

The footage of this incident, captured and shared on social media showed a group of men hitting a person, as he walks into the gates of his apartment complex.

Former CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted, “Extremely sad and shocking incident. Retired Naval Officer got beaten up by goons because of just a WhatsApp forward. Please stop this Gundaraj Uddhav Thackeray Ji. We demand strong action and punishment for these goons.”

Sharma told Times Now that he shared a picture on WhatsApp. The police wanted to arrest him following his own complaint, he added. Mumbai police arrested six people including a Shiv Sena branch head, after Sharma filed an FIR at the Samta Nagar police station.

BJP MLA Atul Bhatkalkar shared a video on Twitter that showed six men hitting him and dragging him by his collar. One of the members slapped him multiple times. The six accused including some Shiv Sena members were given bail on Saturday, NDTV reported.

“We do not know how the picture reached the Sena members,” said Sheela Sharma, daughter of the retired Naval officer. She opposed the bail by saying, “We want strict action. The accused should not have got bail in this way”.

Sharma’s son told India Today that his family does not feel safe in Maharashtra and that they were not happy with actions taken.
