Anurag Kashyap summoned by Mumbai police over rape allegation

Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been summoned by the Mumbai police in connection with a rape case filed against him by actor Payal Ghosh, on Wednesday. Kashyap has been asked to appear before the Versova police on Thursday for further probe on the case.

The Versova  Police registered an FIR against Anurag Kashyap under Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 342 (wrongful confinement), on September 22, 2020, after the actress with her lawyer Nithin Satpute approached the police. 

In her police complaint, the actor alleged that Kashyap raped her in 2013. She also accused him of sexual misconduct which made her feel uncomfortable.

On Tuesday,  Payal Ghosh and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale met Maharashtra Governor, B.S. Koshyari to seek action against Kashyap. Athawale told the reporters that the Governor would discuss this issue further with Maharashtra Home minister, Anil Deshmukh.

On Monday, Gosh in a press conference with Athawale, President of the Republican Party of India (RPI-A), demanded the arrest of Anurag Kashyap. Athawale spoke to the Commissioner, Nangare Patil to take action against the filmmaker.

The Union Minister also told that the party would protest if the police do not arrest the filmmaker.

Last week, Kashyap, through his lawyer has said that he has been deeply pained by the false allegations of sexual misconduct that have recently been made against him and that these allegations are completely false, malicious, and dishonest.

Earlier in this week, Shiv Sena’s Pratap Sarnaik said that he smells conspiracy behind the allegations in the given situation.
