The four professional swimmers were detained after allegedly gang-raping a 23-year-old woman hailing from West Bengal. The incident occurred on the night of March 24 in a room rented by the accused.

Rajat, Shiv Rana, Dev Saraoha, and Yogesh Kumar are the arrested individuals, all in their early twenties and hailing from New Delhi. They were in Bengaluru for swimming practice with Rajath and Shiv Rana present in the city three months before the latter two.

The victim, a nurse in a private hospital, lodged a complaint with the Sanjaynagar police station, a locality-centric station in Bengaluru. In her report, she mentioned her acquaintance with Rajat on a dating app. On befriending each other, they met for dinner at New BEL Road in the city and he invited her to his room that he shared with the other three accused.

On her arrival, the four youths took turns and raped her, she mentioned in the complaint. The victim also claimed to be assaulted. She then called her friends seeking help who arrived during the early hours of March 25 to rescue her. She filed the complaint in the latter half of the day.  The medical examination of the victim confirmed sexual abuse and rape, according to police reports.

The police confirmed to IANS that the accused were national-level swimmers. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (North) Vinayak Patil elaborated to the Indian Express, “ In Bengaluru, they had visited swimming pools in Sadashivanagar and Basavanagudi multiple times. The accused have been sent to judicial custody.”

The accused were arrested from different parts of the city by a special team. Few reports of Rajath’s attempt to flee the city on the lodging of her complaint were stated as well. The case has been registered under section 376D (Gangrape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with a thorough investigation of the same.
