The secretary of a women’s college in Machilipatnam has been arrested on charges of sexual harassment based on a complaint filed by a student of the college.
The Secretary and Correspondent of Grace Nursing College for women, S Ramesh (42) was arrested on Saturday evening on charges of asking for sexual favours from a 22-year old student. The suspect was arrested a day after the woman filed a complaint with the police.
The senior office bearer has been arrested under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 (Nirbhaya Act). Other sections of the Indian Penal Code that outline offences corresponding to outraging the modesty of a woman, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation have also been imposed on the accused, Additional Superintendent of Police M. Sattibabu said.
“The accused has also been booked under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,” Sattibabu added.
According to the complaint, Ramesh had allegedly tried to sexually assault the victim in his office chamber for expressing non-readiness towards entertaining his sexual advances in July this year. After the incident, the complainant vacated her college hostel, the additional superintendent of police said.
After being arrested, the accused was produced before a local and has been remanded by the judicial institution for custody. The police are engaged in active investigation and interrogating the accused. After the incident, V Padma, the Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Women Commission, paid a visit to the college and interacted with the students.
