In a bid to show the ruling party in low light once again, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is leading a protest against the fuel price hike. In the ongoing protest being held at the famous Vijay Chowk, the party leader is being supported by Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha leaders from the party.

During the same protest, Congress launched a new campaign that it termed ‘Mehngai Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ which shall go on till 7th of April. The reason for this protest is that fuel prices have increased nine times in the past 10 days.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was quoted as saying that they knew that fuel prices would increase as elections concluded in five states. He also mentioned how the ruling party does not understand how this impacts the public and that the prices should immediately be brought back to what they were.

On 31st January 2022, India saw the ninth hike in fuel prices by 80 paise. While several union ministers suggest that the hike has come about because of the Ukraine War which began on February 24th after a surge in global prices, critics claim that the hike comes after a break of four months after BJP won in four of the five states in the assembly elections.

Apart from Rahul Gandhi, even Akhilesh Yadav has blamed the opposition for the fuel hike. He claimed it to be ‘another gift of inflation’ after elections in five states.
