Chennai Super Kings announced on Friday that they were terminating the contracts of their players Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina and have removed the names of the two players from their official website. As per the IPL Auction guidelines in 2018, both the players had signed a 3-year contract with the team which would have included the ongoing IPL series in UAE. However, both the cricketers had declined to play in the current season of the game. This has, according to sources, led to CSK taking steps towards the termination. Raina had signed an 11-crore deal with the team while the former Indian spinner, a 2-crore annual contract. According to sources, their salaries will be withdrawn for this season.
Suresh Raina has been with the team since the beginning of IPL in 2008 and is the leading run-scorer in the game and even held the record most matches for Chennai, beating MS Dhoni while Harbhajan Singh had signed onto the team in 2018.
The action also means that the players are no longer a part of Chennai Super Kings and is BCCI does not organize a player auction next year due to possible time constraints, then the two players will be absent from the IPL game for yet one more season.
Currently, CSK lies at the bottom of the points table though the head coach, Stephen Fleming on Thursday said that the team used the six-day break between their matches to gain clarity on what needs to be done to get their momentum back on track. The three-time champions have been off to a rocky start, having lost two of their first three games.
