Mohammed Salah missed a spot-kick in a crucial penalty in World Cup qualifiers against Senegal, causing Egypt’s failure in qualifying. While Sadio Mane‘s decisive kick brought Senegal to Qatar, Egypt faced a 1- 0 defeat. Salah, Liverpool’s star player, faced a compounded defeat with the Pharaohs following the one with the Teranga Lions, while his clubmate Sane blazed through the last penalty on home ground in Dakar.

The Pharaohs were at ease with Senegal when Hamdi Fathi’s own goal had tied the two sides. Fathi’s fourth-minute goal was blazing past Mohamed El-Shenawy, deflecting Boulaye Dia’s shot. Senegal held their footing, later on, dominating most of the match. Egypt relied on Shenaway who indulged in saves, denying Pape Abdou Cisse and Ismaila Sarr in extra time.

The Egyptian players were subjected to extreme racial abuse during the course of the game. The penalties were disturbed with demonstrations of unruly flashlights on the faces of the Egyptian players. “The Egypt national team have been exposed to racism with offensive signs in the stands against the Egyptian players in general, and Mohamed Salah in particular.” said the Egyptian FA in a statement. There were rocks and bottles thrown at them from the stands and at Egypt’s bus when it arrived at the stadium.

The players were also attacked with missiles during warm-ups as well. “The Egyptian group’s buses have also been exposed to assaults that led to broken windows and injuries; filed with pictures and videos as proof in the complaint submitted.”

The qualifiers also saw Portugal beating Macedonia in a playoff which resulted in a 2-0 win for the former. Poland also progressed to join Portugal in the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Brazil emerged as one of the best teams through  Conmebol qualifiers with a 4-0 win. The other qualified teams include Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, and a tie between Ecuador and Argentina who are both qualified. Egypt fails to qualify for finals as Mohammed Salah misses his penalty
