Petra Kvitova put on a spectacular show on Monday in the second round of the straight sets in the French Open to sail past Oceane Dodin. The Czech player beat Dodin 6-3 and 7-5 in teo matches. She had last been seen competing in the U.S Open on hardcourts, and had no formal games prior to the match today.
30-year-old Kvitova showed no signs of rust at the Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris, further adding in her post-match interview that she had never played against Dodin before this. She also said that Oceane Dodin was extremely experienced and “plays very aggressively.” Kvitova, two time Wimbledon winner, has advanced to the second round in the French Open for the 10th time in her career out of a total of 11 appearances.
The Czech in the second half of the match managed to hit eight aces and eight less unforced errors than Dodin sealing her victory. Commenting on the thrilling second half of the match, she said. “she came back and really played much stronger and it was really tough in the end.”
Kvitova in the next round will face Italian Jasmine Paolini, following the latter’s victory on Monday against Aliona Bolsova of Spain. In 2019, she had missed participating in the French Open at Roland Garros due to a severe arm injury.
Kvitova is ranked 11th in the world, while Dodin holds the rank of world 118th aged 23 years. Apart from the Chatrier, which is closed with a roof, all other venues of the French Open had their matches interrupted due to heavy rain in Paris.
