The Health Minister of Haryana Anil Vij took to the social media platform, Twitter to announce that he had tested positive for COVID-19. This comes days after Vij being administered a trial dose of India-made Coronavirus vaccine, Covaxin. He has been admitted to the Government Civil Hospital in the Ambala Cantonment area.

Despite receiving the vaccination on November 20, Vij testing positive has created an uproar on social media. The politician has so far not commented on the same but has asked all persons who came in contact with him recently to get tested and isolate as a precaution. Early last month, Vij had volunteered to be among the first people to be a part of the phase three trials of the COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin. It was administered to the Minister under the supervision of the officials of the Health department and doctors from PGI Rohtak. The later stage trial is crucial to the country and was the largest exercise thus far in seeing the efficacy of the dose against the virus.

Covaxin has been deemed India’s best bet in mass vaccination of the people against the virus. It has been developed by Bharat Biotech in close collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The interim phase 1 and 2 trial results as per the official sources were said to have encouraging results where it was administered on approximately 1000 subjects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the last week chaired several meetings and visited Pune to take stock of India’s present status in the development, production, and distribution of the vaccine once it completes the mandatory clinical trials and produces the necessary immune response on the volunteers.
