HBO declared on August 21st, House of the Dragon will launch on HBO and HBO Max. This series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel named Fire & Blood, published in 2018. The new HBO series, like the source material, is set 200 years before the original Game of Thrones and centers on Daemon Targaryen of House Targaryen, one of the primary characters. This occurs prior to the house’s demise in the brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, and before House Baratheon seized control of the house.

House of the Dragon was first unveiled by HBO in October of this year. In a teaser video released in October, they announced a 2022 debut date and gave us our first look at the series.  The cast was brought together for their first read through, and photos of the event were shared on social media.  Princess Rhaenys Velaryon is played by Eve Best, Viserys Targaryen is played by Paddy Considine, Alicent Hightower is played by Olivia Cooke, Rhaenyra Targaryen is played by Emma D’Arcy, Criston Cole is played by Fabien Frankel, Otto Hightower is played by Rhys Ifans, Mysaria is played by Sonoya Mizuno, Daemon Targaryen is played by Matt Smith.

According to Martin’s personal blog, House of the Dragon concluded filming in February and will premiere the first episode of its 10-part series in August. The HBO drama premieres less than two weeks before Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: Rings of Powers series premieres on September 2nd, which is most likely no coincidence on HBO’s side.

The series is co-created and executive produced by the original author, George R.R. Martin, along with co-showrunner and writers Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik; Sara Hess is also a writer and producer on the show. Paddy Considine will play King Viserys Targaryen, Matt Smith will play Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke will play Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy will play Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Steve Toussaint will play Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best will play Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Fabien Frankel will play Ser Criston Cole, Sonoya Mizuno.
