Farmers’ and Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 will become laws after the Upper House also passes them on Sunday.
According to the government, the bill, invites Private sector to invest in farm and agriculture for better infrastructure and agricultural growth. Under this bill farmers will be allowed to sell their produce outside government-regulated markets.
The bill received resistance from the opposition party as well as the farmers. It is said that the Congress leaders burnt the copies of bills, while farmers protested in various parts of the country. The outrage saw road and railway blockade in Punjab and Haryana. Farmers also fear that there will be cut off in the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Responding to this BJP declined the doubts claiming them to be rumours.
BJP is confident of gaining support from more than 130 out of 245 members because they are the party in power and hence leaders say that they opposed the idea of voting. The bill is currently passed by a voice vote. The Upper House will get back to this discussion on Monday at 9 a.m.
