Union Minister Hardeep Puri stated that the proposal for Phase II of Kochi Metro from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakanad via Infopark may receive approval soon on Monday while delivering a speech during the inauguration of the Thykkoodam-Petta stretch of Kochi Metro through a video conference. He implied that Phase II of the 11.2km will be given a green signal at the earliest. The Union Minister while stating the soon to be approved Phase II is happy news also claimed that preparatory work has already started off along the Kakanad stretch.
The inauguration of the 1.2km stretch marks the ending of Phase I between Aluva and Peta. “There are a total of 22 stations in the first phase and with the increase of 25km, an increase in daily riders is expected “, said Puri. He also added that current ridership in Kochi Metro is 65,000 passengers per day and the extension will likely increase the ridership to over 1 lakh per day.
While inaugurating the final stretch of the first phase of Kochi Metro, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the main focus is on completing the 3.2kms stretch from Peta to Thripunithara constituting of 3 stations. The CM flagged off the first journey of Kochi Metro through the Petta-Thykoodam stretch via a video call from Thiruvanthapuram. The first journey included a few senior officers, MLAs including M Swaraj, P. T. Thomas, Ernakulam MP Hiby Eden, and Kochi Corporation Mayor Soumini Jain
