Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik stepped down as the captain of Kolkata Knight riders on Friday, hours before their match against Mumbai Indians. This decision comes as a major surprise as KKR have been doing well in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and are sitting fourth in the points table with four wins in their eight matches so far. ICC World Cup 2019 cup winning captain Eoin Morgan took charge of the team from Friday.
Karthik is said to have taken this decision with ‘a view to focus on his batting and contributing more to the team’s cause’. Earlier in the season Karthik had faced a lot of criticism for his performances with the bat. Apart from the blistering 29-ball 58 runs knock against Kings XI Punjab, the right-handed batsman has not been able to contribute much with the bat in the tournament so far.
“We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes,” said Venky Mysore, CEO of the franchise in a statement issued by franchaise.
“We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice-captain, is willing to lead the side going forward. DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner,” added Mysore.
Dinesh Karthik was appointed as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 after the two-time title-winning skipper Gautam Gambhir left the franchise.
