The Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has handed in his resignation to the King on Monday the 24th of February 2020. Since he did not appoint any successor, the monarch has asked him to stay as the interim leader. In a two line stated Mahathir said that he has informed the king of his resignation on Monday at 1P.M. Kuala Lumpur time.
According to Reuters, Mahathir has also quit his political party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. It is also said that his part will be relinquishing the ruling government coalition, which now bring about doubt on future partnership between the two.
It is believed that his decision to resign comes after a week of political chaos. His party is said to form a new government, which was said to exclude the successor of his choice Anwar Ibrahim.
The king accepted his resignation after meeting with him later on Monday.
Chief Secretary Mohd Zuki Ali said in a statement, “However, His Highness has given his assent to appoint Mahathir Mohamad as interim prime minister, while waiting for the appointment of the new prime minister. Hence until then, (Mahathir) will manage the country’s affairs until a new prime minister and cabinet are appointed,”
