Two tribal sisters aged 14 and 16 respectively were allegedly gang-raped in Rajganj area of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. The girls consumed poison after they returned home following which, one of them passed away while the other is battling for her life.
The family said that the siblings had gone out with some localites on September 4.
“We thought they went out as usual. However, they were missing for two days and came back on September 6,” their brother said.
Since they were feeling unwell, the family members took the sisters to a local hospital which further referred them to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
“At the hospital, my sisters told us that they were gang-raped by five men and how they managed to escape and reach home. Then we got to know that they consumed poison after coming back home and due to which they fell sick,” added the brother.
As per the officials, the elder sister had passed away on Monday night whereas the younger one was still struggling with a critical condition.
So far, the police said that they have arrested three out of five people related to the case and simultaneously are on a lookout for the other two.
Ever since the body of the deceased girl reached the village this morning, the locals have been protesting and raising questions at the police. According to the officials, a similar incident happened in the same area where another 16-year-old girl was gang-raped and her body was found in the septic tank of a house. The locals alleged that the accused in that case is yet to be arrested by the police.
District police officials, however, have been close-lipped on these allegations. Khageshwar Ray, Local Trinamool Congress MLA, met the minor girls’ father and informed him that he has asked the authorities and administration to take strict action. The father works at a tea garden.
The police have booked the accused on charges of rape and abetment of suicide.
