Nominees of the 95th Academy Awards were announced yesterday in which RRR’s Naatu Naatu got nominated for the ‘Best Original Song’ and became the first Indian song ever to be nominated under this category in the history of the Oscars. Indian documentaries All that breathes and The Elephant Whisperers also found a place in respective nominations for the ‘Best Documentary Feature’ and the ‘Best Documentary Short Film’.

“We created history” tweeted RRR‘s official Twitter handle in response to the big nomination. Earlier this month Naatu Naatu song had also won the Golden Globe in the same category. However, it missed nominations at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

Other nominations that the event saw included Everything Everywhere All At Once which received the most number of nominations, followed by All Quiet on the Western Front and Banshees of Inisherin. For the ‘Best Picture’ category, popular films like Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick got nominated. Acting categories saw Brendon Fraser receiving his first ever Oscar nomination, and Angela Bassett of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever becoming the first actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for a performance in a Marvel Studios film.

Among these nominations, many critically acclaimed films of the year like Nope, Bardo, The Women King, and Decision To Leave got snubbed. The Indian submission for the ‘Best International Feature’ The Chhello Show was shortlisted but was left out of the final slate in the category.

With third-time host Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscar ceremony is all set now to take place in Los Angeles on March 13.
