As Congress leader and former finance minister walked out of Tihar Jail after 106 days behind the bars he was received by his supporters on Wednesday evening.
P Chidambaram was granted bail in the INX corruption case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate. Chidambaram’s son and Lok Sabha member, Karti was elated to see his father outside the prison. He said, “I am very happy that he is coming home. It’s been a long 106 days, an unwarranted pre-trial remand. I am glad that the SC has given relief,”
Chidambaram is out on a conditional bail ie the SC has restricted Chidambaram from making any public statements or press interviews in regard to the INX Media case. He is also barred from traveling abroad.
The former finance minister after coming out called for a press conference on Thursday and expressed his happiness of being outside the bars. In the press conference he called Modi government clueless and stubborn in defending catastrophic mistakes, ranging from demonetisation to “tax terrorism”. He further called the economy floundering. Former finance minister lashed out at the current finance minister Sitharaman for saying in Parliament that her family didn’t eat onions as the onion prices in the country go up.
Apart from talking about the economy he also commented on the J&K issue expressing how he wishes to visit Kashmir if the government allows him to. Furthermore, he expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir, who he said have been denied their basic freedoms since August 4, 2019.
Chidambaram further emphasized how in 106 days not a single charge was framed against him.
