A fire erupted at 4 AM on February 18, on the premises of Varroc Lighting Systems India Pvt. Ltd. in Maan near Hinjewadi. Varroc Lighting is a manufacturer and supplier of exterior lighting systems, powertrains, electrical components, and other automobile parts to various sectors in the automobile industry. Their premises in Pune is one of their largest facilities in terms of area. It is one of the biggest fire incidents reported in the lighting industry so far.
Firemen worked actively on the spot and the flames were doused after four hours of intensive mitigation procedures. The fire which occurred due to a short circuit quickly made its way to other areas in the building further aggravating the issue.
“The fire incident took place outside the manufacturing block, which then spread to the packaging area and resulted in a fire outbreak. There are no human casualties reported. The Company is in the process of ascertaining the actual cause of the fire and the loss caused by it. Adequate steps are being undertaken to ensure customer service at the earliest,” Varroc Engineering said in a statement submitted on Tuesday.
The plant has a lot of inflammable substances such as plastic, thinner, silicone fluids and chemicals. It has been suspected that the presence of these materials also aided the spread of the fire throughout.
No significant impact on the operations of the firm was reported. The Hinjewadi plant contributes to 2 per cent to the overall revenue of Varroc Engineering Ltd.
