On Thursday playing against the King XI Punjab at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Dubai, Rohit Sharma completed his 5000 run score with a beautiful cover drive against Mohammed Shami in the second over. Rohit Sharma has now more than 5000 runs under his belt in 191 matches. The other two players to score similar runs are Royal Challenger Banglore’s (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli (5426) and Chennai Super King’s (CSK) batsman Suresh Raina (5368).
Rohit Sharma was just 2 runs away from joining the club of 5000 runs scorer but he missed his chance in the match against RCB on 29th October 2020. He lost his wicket at 8 runs. He also has the maximum number of sixes-201, amongst the three players.
Suresh Raina was the first batsman to reach the run mark of more than 5000 while playing against RCB in the year 2019. Virat Kohli joined the club later that year playing against MI.
Rohit Sharma started his IPL career with Deccan Charges in 2008. In 2009 he was appointed as the vice-captain of the team. His IPL career took off when he was sold for $2 million for Mumbai Indians in 2011. He scored his first century in year 2012 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with 109* in 60 balls.
Since then he shined in all the matches he played eventually being appointed as the skipper of Mumbai Indians. Under his captaincy MI won its first IPL title in 2013. The wins continued in the year 2015 and 2017 and 2019. He was also chosen as the Man of the Match in the finals in the year 2015 with 50 runs off 26 balls at the strike rate of 192.31.
After M.S. Dhoni, Rohit Sharma is the only captain who has led the path of victory for his team for three times in his terrific career. His best score has been an unbeaten 109 in the 2012 edition of IPL. In all the 192 matches he has played his avg strike rate is 131.26 including one century and 37 fifties.
His score mark in 2020 includes two fifties and is placed at number five in the list of most fifties for this season till Oct 1, 2020. He is also included in the most boundaries list with 10 sixes and 13 fours. In the match last night Mumbai Indians defeated King XI Punjab by 48 runs. They now lead the IPL 2020 points table with four points.
With a great start of the season, Rohit Sharma would also be determined to win the title this year in order to break the odd year wins tag. Also, by doing so MI would be the only team to win IPL for two years in a row.
