The Raipur Police and the Delhi Police Cyber Cell have filed two separate FIRs against, Muhammad Zubair, fact-checker and co-founder of online news media portal AltNews. The case has been registered under the relevant sections of the IT Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following complaints from the National Commission of Protection of Child Right (NCPCR).

The NCPCR has filed a complaint with regard to a tweet shared by Zubair on August 6, on the online microblogging platform. Reportedly, the post contained an image of a minor girl whose face had been blurred shared as a part of the online spat he was having with her father. The case has extended to two other persons, as participants for commenting on the post, where one remains anonymous, while the other has deleted their tweet. The Commission has alleged that the accused was “stalking a minor girl on Twitter” and has written to the Delhi deputy commissioner of police and the nodal cyber cell officer to take action against Zubair.

Zubair has responded to the allegations, saying in a statement to The Indian Express that the complaint is baseless and frivolous. He further added that he will be responding to the charges through legal means.

The Raipur police have registered the complaint under section 509B on the use of electronics in sexual harassment of the Indian Penal Code and section 12 of the POCSO act. As per reports, the authorities have also summoned Twitter and representatives of the popular microblogging platform on the charges of abetting the harassment.
