Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat and Treasurer of the Indian National Congress Mr Ahmed Patel, 71, passed away during the early hours on Wednesday in the Gurugram hospital battling Covid after multiple organ failures.
Ahmed Patel’s son Faisal tweeted that his father died at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Faisal also informed in the tweet that Ahmed Patel was battling Covid for the past one month and breathed his last early this morning. He requested all the well-wishers and close ones of his father to avoid any form of mass gathering owing to the Covid situation.
He had tested positive Covid-19 on October 1 and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on November 15. As soon as he became aware of his health, he urged everybody in his contact to check upon their health as well and stay safe.
PM Narendra Modi grieved the demise of Ahmed Patel in a tweet, writing that he was known for his wit and he spent precious years of his life in public service. “Nobody can deny his contribution in strengthening Congress Party in Gujarat. May he rest in peace.”
Congress president Sonia Gandhi also condoled the senior member’s death by saying that she seems to have lost a loyal associate, irreplaceable individual and a good friend. Several other leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Randeep Singh Surjewala and more mourned the death of such an experienced politician.
An eight-time parliamentarian, Ahmed Patel served three terms in the Lok Sabha and five terms in the Rajya Sabha. He was appointed as the Treasurer of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in August 2018. Patel also played an important role in forming the Narmada Management Authority to look after the Sardar Sarovar Project.
