During an inspection in the Thane area, three people were arrested for attacking staff members of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. A number of homes lacked electricity meters, and the inspection found evidence of power theft. When the illegal connections were cut off the locals attacked and abused the staff. A complaint resulted in arrests, and further investigations are ongoing.
Three people have been taken into arrest by police for allegedly attacking employees of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) during an inspection in the Thane district, an official said on Monday.
When the MSEDCL team visited Kunde village in Bhiwandi taluka on Friday, the incident happened. Inspector Sandeepan Sonawane of the Ganesh Police Station stated that during the inspection, they discovered cases of power theft and that almost six out of ten homes lacked fitted energy meters.
The staff removed the connection wires and disconnected the illegal power source in accordance with protocol. According to the official, this action enraged some people, who allegedly confronted the MSEDCL personnel, hurled abuses at them, and assaulted them.
The officials of the village panchayat were then contacted by the MSEDCL team. However, the police said that the accused and other villagers followed them to the panchayat office, where they once more harassed, threatened, and assaulted the officials, injuring a few of them.
The police arrested three people and filed a formal charge against the accused under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after receiving a complaint from the MSEDCL team on Saturday, the official said. The police also stated that efforts were on to capture another accused in the case.
