Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has taken a big stand against state-run media in Russia. Several of these networks have been prohibited by the firm because they use dishonest methods to disseminate false information and sway public opinion.

Meta clarified in a statement that it has increased the scope of its enforcement actions against Russian state media because of their continuous foreign involvement. It is forbidden for Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other connected companies to use Meta’s platforms anywhere in the globe.

The Russian government, however, has refuted these charges, asserting that the claims made against these media organizations are baseless.

It is anticipated that the prohibitions will take effect soon. Requests for comment have not yet received a response from the Russian embassy in Washington or Rossiya Segodnya, the owner of the Sputnik news service.

Due to accusations that they are trying to influence political discourse in Western nations, Russian official media channels are coming under more and more criticism. The company Meta, which also owns WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads, has tightened its sanctions on social media companies.

Meta imposed relatively modest limitations on Russian state-run media two years ago, including forbidding them from airing advertisements and restricting the audience for the material they produced. Meta has agreed with demands from the EU, UK, and Ukraine to restrict some Russian official media in these territories ever since the war in Ukraine began. The United States has charged that Russia Today (RT) paid a Tennessee-based corporation $10 million to produce and disseminate information that supported pro-Russian narratives. These recordings were covertly modified, uploaded, and directed by RT staff, according to an indictment.

Additional penalties on RT have also been issued by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who described the network as a “de facto arm of Russia’s intelligence apparatus.” He charged that RT is a member of a network of media organizations supported by Russia that seeks to weaken American democracy.

Reporters were informed on Friday by the senior US envoy that RT was a member of a network of media organizations supported by Russia that had been working to “undermine democracy in the United States” in a clandestine manner. He went on to say that a unit with cyber-operational skills and connections to Russian intelligence has been “embedded within RT” by the Russian government. Mr. Blinken’s comments on X were broadcast live by RT, which dubbed it the “latest conspiracy theory in the US.” These claims have been refuted by RT, which has referred to them as a “conspiracy theory.”
