A day after the shocking stampede at Mahakumbh that unfortunately took the lives of thirty people, Prayagraj, witnesses another tragedy. A massive fire broke out in the Jhunsi Chhatnag Ghat and Nageshwar Ghat in Sector 22 of the Maha Kumbh festival area. These details of the incident were reported by Hindustan.
According to this report, there were at least twelve tents that were burnt due to the fire. However, the authorities quickly jumped into action and the flames were extinguished soon after. The fire department also reported that everyone was safe and there were no casualties in the incident.
A video that was circulated by ANI, shows how the officers belonging to the fire department promptly took action and were using fire extinguishers along with many other safety measures to control and seize the fire. The video also showcased many charred and burning tents.
According to the news agency, Press Trust of India (PTI), Pramod Sharma, the chief fire officer of the Kumbh region mentioned that the news of the fire was reported in the afternoon and was quickly disseminated. He further added that even though the actions were taken in a swift manner, it was difficult for the fire engines to reach the location as there were no proper roads or definitive routes.
Pramod Sharma also said that the tents that were put up were unauthorised according to the sub-divisional magistrate. He stated that, “15 tents were gutted in this fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated.”
The fire was right after that stampede that took place on Wednesday. It took place early in the morning, as millions of devotees marched religiously on Mauni Amavasya, a day that is considered to be highly sacred and is regarded with great honor in the Hindu calendar. This incident took the lives of 30 pilgrims while leaving 60 of them injured.
A fire broke out just a day after the stampede, deepening the devotees’ misfortune. Another fire had already occurred on January 19. This incident was caused by three gas cylinder explosions in Sector 19 of the campsite. The fire department responded swiftly, extinguishing the flames and preventing further spread. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
