On March 7, Jammu and Kashmir Chief and Finance Minister Omar Abdullah presented the budget for the state, a historical achievement as it was the first budget presented in six years.  Major allocations were in the agriculture, healthcare, tourism, and industry. Focus was also given to empowerment initiatives and boosting economic growth in the territory.

In his speech, Abdullah said, “The total net budget estimates for fiscal 2025-26 are ₹1,12,310 crore, excluding provisions for ways and means advances and overdrafts.”

Some of the main allocations included Rs 815 crore for the agricultural sector. Primacy will be given to horticulture and the two-crop pattern. The wool and leather industry was also emphasized, which aims to generate around 2.88 lakh jobs.

The tourism sector was given funds of Rs 390.20 crore. This includes subsequent plans to develop Sonmarg as a new winter hotspot for tourists. Efforts are also underway to develop Sidhra and Basholi into adventure destinations by establishing water parks.

Within the education sector, Abdullah also announced the development of a National Law university with  Rs 50 crore allocation.

Moreover, the Lakhpati Didi Scheme, which was newly launched, will provide aid and assistance to around 40,000 women to begin their own micro-startups.  Women will also be allowed to travel via public buses for free. This again marks a milestone in the UT as it’s a first-ever scheme of its kind.

For Antyodaya families in Jammu & Kashmir,  the government will provide 200 units of free electricity per month. AAY families will also be given free rations of around 10kg per person beginning from April 1.

Additionally, Abdullah also committed to upholding press freedom in the UT where citizens have a right to stay informed and ensuring transparency and protecting the rights of journalists.
