A sudden and massive cloudburst struck Dehradun late on Monday night, triggered flash floods, damaging infrastructure and submerging large parts of the city. The rain has claimed the lives of four people, while at least 2 are missing. Extensive damage to roads, homes, and businesses, are causing major problems in the city.
The rainfall washed away a key bridge on the Dehradun–Haridwar national highway, bringing traffic to a complete halt and stranding hundreds of commuters. A 100-meter-long stretch of road collapsed in the Maldevta area, which led to cutting of power access for several villages and raising concerns. Forcing families to flee to safer locations.
Rescue and relief operations began immediately after the disaster. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed across affected zones evacuating stranded residents stuck in buildings, clearing blocked roads for better navigation, and searching for missing persons and further analysing the whole situation.
Citizens have been advised to remain indoors and avoid traveling to vulnerable areas and remain in safe zones. Electricity and water supply in several parts of the city have been cut causing distress to the general public. The mobile networks are also experiencing failures causing further problems to residents and the officials.
The monitoring is continuously underway as the risk of further rains and need for disaster management remains high. Steps are taken to curb this issue as temporary shelters are set up, while coordination with local NGOs is underway to provide food, clean drinking water, and medical assistance to those in need. The situation now seems to be under control as aid is provided to those in need.
A disaster like this signals Uttarakhand’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather events and huge issues, urgently highlighting the special need for better urban planning, capable and early reactive warning systems, and stronger infrastructure to withstand such damaging disasters.
