The Indian government has issued an advisory warning against its citizens joining the Russian military, after reports emerged of two Indian men allegedly being deceived with the promise of construction jobs and later being recruited into combat roles.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described such recruitment as “fraught with danger” and stressed that Indians should exercise extreme caution before travelling for employment opportunities in Russia.
“We are aware of some Indian nationals who have been misled into joining the Russian Army. We are in touch with the Russian authorities to ensure their early discharge,” an MEA spokesperson said on Thursday.
The warning comes after two Indian men reported to authorities that they had gone to Russia expecting secure construction work, but they were instead forced into military service. Their families, stunned by the situation,
have now sought assistance to bring them back safely.
Officials underlined that New Delhi has been “consistent and clear” in advising against any involvement in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“Our position is firm- Indians should not be part of this war. It is not only a legal concern but also a grave risk to life,” the spokesperson added.
The matter has already been taken up by India and Moscow, and the release of the men is expected. Moreover, there is oversight to prevent similar incidents. The Indian government has been looking for ways to hold recruitment agents accountable for misleading workers.
While the government has stated that Indian nationals must pursue verified and legitimate avenues of overseas employment, this incident has sparked fresh worries among families of workers in Russia.
One relative said, “We just want him back home safe. He went for a job, not to fight in someone else’s war.”
The government statement underscores a fresh reminder of the difficulties faced by migrant workers, especially those who fall prey to false promises, in regions troubled by conflict.
