On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a resolution demanding immediate ceasefire in the Gaza city was raised by the United Nation Security Council but it was vetoed by the United States. This resolution asked for an, ‘immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties’ followed by release of all who are kept hostage by Hamas and other groups and also remove all restrictions put on humanitarian aid on Gaza. It was supported by the other 14 members of the council except for the US.
Initiated in August, this resolution was drafted by 10 members of the council and has succeeded the UN’s declaration of famine in the state of Gaza after two years of Israel declaring war on the city of Hamas, situated in the territory of Palestine. This war has killed over 65,141 people in Palestine and according to the quote by the Algerian Ambassador Amar Bandjama, the deaths include more than 18,000 children, 12,000 women, 1400 doctors and nurses along with about 250 journalists. He also claimed that Israel is ‘immune’ not under the protection of the international laws but because of the “bias of the international system”.
The US previously used its veto power in June to back Israel and now again. This repertoire has now become the subject of anger of the rest 14 members who are becoming vocal of their frustration towards their inability to stop Israel from showing such inhumanity towards the Gaza residents.
In the annual UN summit, scheduled for the next week in New York, the central issue will be Israel committing ‘genocide’ in Gaza sice october 2023 with the motive of completely annihilating the Palestinians. Israel was first accused of this on September 16, 2025 when the UN mandated international investigation commission gave their independent analysis. Although the Israel Ambassador, Danny Danon said that the country needs “no justification” for its war and further thanked the US for their veto.
