On September 27, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Bharat Sanchar Nigam 4G stack of the Swadeshi in a milestone that has propelled India to a desired list of countries that produce telecom equipment.

It is also the silver jubilee day of BSNL and PM Modi inaugurated over 97,500 mobile 4G towers, with 92,600 being 4G technology sites in BSNL, as per a PTI report.

Swadeshi technology literally translates to self-made or indigenous technology and has received push by the central government as a way of ensuring that Make in India is taken to another level and trade pressure by United States President Donald Trump, who has increased import tariffs.

It is essential to note that these 97,500 mobile 4G towers were commissioned and constructed at a rate of approximately 37,000 crore using indigenous technology.

The network designed by India will be a cloud-based one, 5G upgradable in the future and can upgrade smoothly to 5G, an official told PTI.

The entry into the League of Nations of India, like China, Denmark, South Korea and Sweden, which produce homegrown telecom equipment, is made with the launch.

Implementation of the Swadeshi 4G network is an innovative move in keeping with the vision of the Prime Minister of a digital India, narrowing the digital divide and empowering rural populations, and prepares BSNL to upgrade to 5G and integrate.

With this launch, 26700 plus unconnected villages (of which 2472 are in Odisha) in remote and border regions will be connected. It will cover more than 20 lakh new subscribers, it said.

These towers use solar power and thus become the largest solar-powered cluster of green telecom sites in India, and a leap towards green infrastructure.

This aside, Modi also launched the 100 per cent 4G saturation network of India under digital Bharat Nidhi; 29,000 to 30,000 villages are linked under a mission-mode undertaking, the report added.
