The British monarch witnessed an unprecedented legal crisis on Thursday, 19th Feb, 2026 when Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested due to suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was released from custody later in the evening In a day though he still remains under investigation. This event marks the first time in ages that a senior from the Royal Family has been arrested since King Charles I in 1647.

The once upon a time Duke of York was detained at around 8:00 AM in the morning by the Thames Valley Police at Wood Farm Cottage on the Sandringham Estate. After about ten hours of interrogation, he was “released under investigation”. He seemed visibly shook by the incident as he left the police station, in a dark vehicle.

Andrew is being investigated under the allegations of sharing confidential government information with the late billionaire sex offender Jeffery Epstein. This comes after the huge document dump of the Department of justice in January 2026. The documents contained emails from 2010 that allegedly claimed that Andrew forwarded trade reports and investment briefs concerning Afghanistan to Epstein. This took place while Andrew was UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investments.

Buckingham Palace immediately distanced the Crown from this scandal. In a rare flow of events, King Charles III also issued a stern statement stating the law shall take the necessary steps. BBC states that the king wasn’t aware of the arrest until it was implicated, highlighting the “zero tolerance” approach towards the legal accountability in the family. The king further gave his approval by stating that what would follow “is the full, fair and proper process”. He also stated that he would wholeheartedly support the authorities.

Legal experts suggest that the UK considers misconduct in public office as a serious common law offence and it may result in life imprisonment. Even as Andrew stands eighth in the line succession line, the arrest has reignited demands from the Parliament to remove him entirely from the list.

With the ongoing search at both the Royal Lodge in Windsor and Wood Farm, the country focused on the case which might permanently change how the public perceives royal accountability and immunity.
