On 9th January, Shubhada Kodare (28) was stabbed to death by her colleague, Krishna Kanoja, in their office parking lot over an alleged money dispute. 

This Wednesday, the National Commission of Women, took suo motu cognisance and went to the crime scene for inspection. The NCW members examined the investigation progress with the city police commissioner, district collector and other senior officials. 

According to the police, Krishna attacked Shubhada because of the unresolved money dispute. He gave her a loan and she was asking for some time to pay him back but he became very aggressive and killed her by stabbing her with a knife in their office parking lot. In the CCTV footage many people were standing nearby but nobody took any action to save the victim. NCW press release stressed upon the phenomenon of the bystander effect. 

In response to the incident,the press release by NCW mentioned that nobody arbitrated to stop the incident, instead the bystanders watched the whole incident. Vijaya Rahatkar, chairperson of NCW created a fact-finding committee for detailed investigation and to find required and strong measures to avert such crimes. 

The committee is headed by commission’s member secretary Meenakshi Negi and includes Former Director General of Police, Kerala, R Sreelekha and B.K Sinha, Former Director General of Police, Haryana. The committee will present their verdicts and recommendations within 10 working days. They both reached Pune on Tuesday and began the inspection.

NCW members talked to the father and sister of the victim and gave them assurance that they will provide justice to the family, local administration and law enforcement agencies are also working on their behalf. The team conversed with other employers of the call centre. The focal point of the discussions was more stricter initiatives for women safety in the workplace.
