“Home Alone” actress Catherine O’Hara

The world of entertainment is mourning the loss of Catherine O’Hara, The Emmy Award-winning comic actress. Aged 71, she passed away on Friday at her home in Los Angeles due to serious health complications.

Earlier that morning, paramedics were called to her home around 4:48 a.m. Reports say she was having difficulty breathing. Her death was later confirmed by her agency and her manager.

A Career Full of Laughter, O’Hara was a giant in the world of comedy. She first became famous in the 1970s with the sketch show SCTV. Movie fans knew her best as the mother, Kate McCallister, in the Home Alone films. She also played Delia Deetz in the classic movie Beetlejuice.

In recent years, she gained a whole new group of fans. She played the eccentric Moira Rose on the hit show Schitt’s Creek. This role earned her an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe.

Even in her final months, O’Hara remained very active. She appeared in the second season of The Last of Us as a therapist named Gail. She also starred in the series The Studio. Her very last screen appearance was in a documentary about her late friend, John Candy, which aired in October 2025.

A Unique Heart, O’Hara often talked about a rare medical condition she had. It is called Dectrocardia with Situs Inversus. This meant her heart and other organs were on the opposite side of her body. She often joked about being a “mirror image” and called herself a “freak” with a smile.

Tributes Pour In Friends and co-stars are sharing their grief. Macaulay Culkin, her on-screen son from Home Alone, said, “Mama. I thought we had time”. Pedro Pascal also posted a touching message.

O’Hara is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke. Her legacy of laughter will live on forever.
