The Airports Authority of India will introduce a new flow management system in the new international terminal at Chennai airport, aiming to reduce waiting time.

It will be one of the few tech-enabled systems in the country. Chennai airport’s new international terminal was opened to ensure smoother passenger flow during peak hours.

The facility is currently operational at Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai airports, and it is currently being tested in Chennai. An AAI official stated that it would help them monitor the time taken by passengers at different points such as entry, check-in counters, security, immigration, and other areas.

Additionally, the sensors installed will send alerts if there is passenger congestion at different locations at the international departures and arrivals terminals. They will offer historical data about the airport authorities to discover the passenger flow pattern.

According to an airline official, it would improve passenger experience since the footfall is also increasing because of the increase in demand for travel to international destinations.

The passenger flow management system is part of the airport expansion plan, but it is yet to be installed at the domestic terminal.

The new international terminal has several new facilities that use cutting-edge technology to enhance the passenger experience. Some of the facilities offered at the terminal include the automated tray system at baggage check and self-baggage drop counters.

The airport handled a total of 4,98,222 international passengers in June as compared to 3,88,689 in June 2022, an increase of 28.2%.
