Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to begin his US visit tomorrow. Beginning from the Quad Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, he will be seen engaging in high-level meetings with World Leaders and attending and participating in discussions with the United Nations.

The Quad summit will address issues relevant to the global south including the regional stability in the Indo-Pacific and global conflicts, focusing on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and Gaza. Towards the end of the Summit, an announcement regarding a humanitarian health security initiative for cancer is anticipated as an outcome.

Here is a breakdown of the expectations from his trip:

The Quad Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the Quad Summit where he will be joining US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss concerns such as regional security and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

Bilateral Conversations with leaders attending the Quad Summit

Modi will also interact within separate bilateral group meetings with other leaders in attendance at the Summit. In these meetings, he will focus his attention on strategies to address ongoing global conflicts, including the crisis in Ukraine and Gaza, technology, and defense.

Focus on Global Conflicts

Though no formal proposal is expected at the Quad Summit, India’s engagement with the Ukraine crisis as a potential mediator will be watched closely. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, India is engaged in dialogues with global partners and world leaders.

Addressing concerns of the global south

PM Modi is set to highlight the struggles faced by the global south, in terms of equitable development, climate action, and the digital divide. Experts have conveyed that this will be a key talking point in the upcoming visit. 

Summit of the future at the UN General Assembly

On 23rd September, PM Modi will address the United Nations General Assembly at the Summit of the Future where his speech may reflect India’s stance on global conflicts and our approach to bridging developmental gaps. He is likely to highlight the domains of focusing on sustainable development, climate issues, and international cooperation.

Announcement of cancer initiative 

The Quad Summit will have an impactful conclusion with the announcement of a new initiative to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. This initiative stresses on minimizing the disease’s impact on the patient and their families. It looks at the disease in a holistic fashion, centering on health protection and humanitarian factors.
