Atishi Marlene, Education and Revenue Minister of Delhi along with Mayor Shelly Oberoi, in a press interview, talked about the steps taken by the government after the death of three IAS aspirants because of waterlogging in the basement in old Rajendra Nagar. The government has taken action against all the coaching institutions constructed in the basement illegally.
A committee will be formed involving government officials and students from different coaching institutions to construct the new law. The new law will contain measures to improve infrastructure quality, teacher’s credibility, fee structure and blockage of fake advertisements. Public response will also be taken into consideration, to understand the changes that are needed.
Municipal Corporation of Delhi is working on clamping down the illegally built institutions just to acquire money from the aspirants and involved in violation of laws. Basements of 30 coaching institutions including Sanskriti Academy, IAS Gurukal, Drishti IAS, Vajiram and Sriram IAS,etc have been shut down and 200 coaching centres have received notices for providing accommodation to students in the basement. Rau IAS, the coaching center where the incident happened did not have maintained entry or exit gates which caused the water swamping and students got stuck.
The involved officers have been taken into custody for being reluctant towards the well-being of the aspirants. The hunt for the incharge of the grievance portal, who ignored the complaint registered by the aspirant to MCD regarding the illegal operation of the basement at Rau’s IAS Study Circle is still ongoing. A junior engineer who looks after drainage control has been fired from Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
On Monday, an IAS aspirant revealed that he lodged a complaint to MCD regarding the illegal operation of the basement on 15 and 22 July but his plea remained unnoticed and no action took place. Atishi has cleared that the Delhi government will not sit quietly and action will be taken against the officers who were reluctant towards the student’s plea and responsible for the mishap.
“I want to give assurance to the people of Delhi that we will punish any officer involved in this, regardless of the rank. Magisterial report will be submitted in the next six days.” Atishi told Hindustan Times.
