Microsoft has unveiled Dragon Copilot, a new AI healthcare assistant that seeks to streamline administrative duties while improving healthcare procedures through clinical documentation. A brand new AI assistant that is intended to support medical practitioners. As part of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, this new AI tool can make clinical notes, record conversations, produce referral letters, and even write post-visit summaries.

In a blog post on Monday, March 3, 2025, the company stated that it leverages the ambient listening and natural language transcription technology created by AI voice firm Nuance, which Microsoft purchased for a total of $ 16 billion in 2021. These features have been further refined through generative AI and modified to include healthcare safeguards.

The emergence of generative AI solutions for the healthcare business is driven by the desire to streamline administrative processes, enhance productivity, and combat fatigue among practitioners. Microsoft has become a significant player in the rapidly growing industry of AI note-taking applications.

“No one becomes a clinician to complete paperwork, but it is becoming an increasingly significant administrative burden that diverts time and focus from providing patients with care and support.” Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO stated in the X post, “For this reason we are launching Dragon Copilot, the industry’s first AI assistant for clinical workflow.”

The AI will assist physicians with automatically creating notes, post-visit overviews, and referral letters in addition to retrieving information from medical sources. Additionally, it will assist medical practitioners in revising current documentation. It also has the ability to capture and interpret vocal data from doctor-patient interactions in a variety of languages. It can then combine this information with other data from medical sources to create medical notes that are both helpful and summarized.

The tech giant said the AI’s capabilities are based on a ‘secure data estate’ and provide sufficient compliance safeguards, but it did not specify any steps being done to maintain data security and privacy. In May, Dragon Copilot will be widely available in the United States and Canada. They also plan to expand to European countries like Germany, the UK, and France by later this year.
