Around 7,550 women had been reported missing within the span of the previous six months, according to the data released by the home department of Karnataka.
The state of Karnataka is currently unsettled with the escalation in the number of women being missing in the state. The report released by the home department of Karnataka states that there are 7,550 reported cases of missing women in the past six months. Although the police managed to trace down 5,855 women, out of the 7,550 women there are still 1,695 cases that still remain unsolved.
The police speculate that there are many reasons that contribute to the cases like conflicts regarding finance or property in the family, influences of media, affairs and even kidnapping and smuggling of women. Out of all the reasons, one of the most daunting reasons is human trafficking.
In the state of Karnataka itself there have been 42,236 reported cases of missing women in the previous three and a half years, according to the data released by the home department. This year the highest number of missing reports cases have been recorded. From Mysore with 109 cases, Belgaum reporting 87 cases and Shimoga and Tumkur reporting 84 and 75 cases, to districts like Vijayapura, Ramanagara and Chitradurga, 59, 51 and 48 cases have been filed. Similar reports have been filed in the district of Kolar and Davangere. Compared to other parts of the state, Bengaluru has recorded the highest number of missing women cases which is 429.
The Karnataka police has teamed up with organizations that work for women safety and the Self-help groups in order to locate the missing women, understanding the reason and spreading awareness among the citizens especially regarding safety of women.
G.Parameshwara, the state home minister stated that “from every district there have been a special team of police formed in order to find the missing women and take measures to ward off such incidents in future.” The minister also requested the citizens to be careful and aware and report immediately if they find anything suspicious as it will help the police to curb further similar incidents.
