Leaders of the (G7) underlined the vital significance of preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait during the recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Reiterating their commitment to a peaceful resolution of cross-strait tensions the leaders issued a joint statement in which they strongly supported Taiwan’s admittance into international organizations.
The G7 leaders stressed the significance of preserving harmony and stability across the Taiwan Strait, seeing it as essential to global prosperity and security. In contexts where formal statehood is not necessary they declared support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations such as the World Health Assembly and WHO technical meetings.
They supported Taiwan’s participation as a guest or observer in circumstances where statehood is required. The G7 emphasized the necessity of peaceful communication to resolve tensions across the Taiwan Strait while restarting their core position on Taiwan which includes adherence to the one-China policy. At the 79th UNGA the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US and the EU reaffirmed this position at a high-level meeting.
They also discussed more general issues related to the East and South China Seas. With particular condemnation of China’s militarization and intimidation in the South China Sea the leaders expressed their firm opposition to unilateral actions intended to change the status quo.
Citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as a crucial legal framework governing maritime activity they underlined that China’s territorial claims lacked legal basis under international law. The G7s statement was welcomed by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) which expressed appreciation for the groups steadfast support.
According to the MOFA Taiwan will continue to work with G7 members and other like-minded countries to uphold democracy, freedom, the rule of law and human rights and jointly preserve peace and prosperity in the region and globally.
As diplomatic allies continue to push for Taiwan’s membership in the UN system, the country’s integration into the global community has been gaining traction. Taiwan and its allies are still dedicated to promoting peace and stability in the region by working together and upholding international law even in the face of ongoing tensions.
