A two-day G20 Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) meeting began in Pune. A total of 65 delegates from the IWG member countries, guest nations and international organizations joined the meeting. It consisted of a series of official meetings, followed by a visit to the Pune University for a plantation drive, and then a workshop on ‘Financing for the Cities of Tomorrow’.

Narayan Rane, the Minister of MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) inaugurated the sessions and welcomed the delegates. He said that the G20 IWG will provide direction to everyone on how to develop future cities. “The use of technology while keeping in mind the impact on the environment for the infrastructure development would be discussed in the two-day IWG”, he added.

As per Rane, the global recession that has affected many countries, is expected to hit India after June. But he also added that India’s growth is on the right path and it aims to jump to the fifth position in world economic status by 2030, from its current tenth position.

The 2023 Infrastructure Agenda was the umbrella theme of discussion for the delegates. The Agenda is based on having a resilient, inclusive and sustainable urban infrastructure, which promotes equitable growth. It is in line with India’s G20 theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.

The two-day IWG meeting is being held by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Government of India, with Australia and Brazil as co-chairs.
