Kangana Ranaut, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Mandi, ignited controversy on Tuesday with her remarks suggesting the reinstatement of the three farm laws that had been repealed following months of farmer protests. After receiving criticism from both the Opposition and the BJP, she has now withdrawn the statement.
In a statement, the actor-turned-politician said, “I know this will be controversial… but I feel the farm laws that were repealed should be brought back.” She suggested that farmers themselves should demand their return, describing them as a pillar of the nation’s development. She urged the farmers to call for the reinstatement of the laws, claiming it would be in their best interest.
These comments resulted in the Opposition attacking the ruling-party, stating that they [Congress] would never want that. They pointed out that over 750 farmers had lost their lives before the Modi government finally acted and repealed the controversial farm laws. They further assured that, despite any efforts by Narendra Modi and his MPs, the laws would not be reinstated.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia then intervened, clarifying that the comments reflected Kangana Ranaut’s personal views and not the party’s stance on the matter. He stated that these statements on the farm bills, which were withdrawn by the Central government, are solely her personal opinion, and that the party does not endorse it.
Following this clarification by the BJP, the actor responded and acknowledged that her views were that of her own.
On Wednesday, the actor released a video statement on X that apologized for her actions. The video stated, “…I also have to keep in mind that I am no longer just an actor but also a BJP member. My opinions can’t be personal, they have to reflect the party’s stand. I regret if I have disappointed anyone with my words or opinions. I take my words back.”
This is not the first instance of Kangana Ranaut making remarks about the farm laws that have caused controversy. Previously, she claimed how there were dead bodies hanging and rapes happening while the farmers’ protests were underway. At that time as well, the BJP had distanced itself from her comments, directing Ranaut not to make such statements.
