The host of the legendary American TV game show Bob Barker passed away at age 99 on August 27, 2023, at his home in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles. While the world mourns his absence, what certainly remains is his illustrious career as the good-natured host of “Price is Right”.

Barker, born on December 12, 1923, in Washington, began his journey after landing the hosting gig of “Price is Right” in 1972. Due to Barker’s charm and iconic catchphrases, the show quickly became an audience favorite. His advocacy towards animal rights and welfare is especially noteworthy. He ended every episode with a plea to “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.”

In the 35 years that the show ran, Barker received numerous accolades, including 14 Daytime Emmy awards. He retired in 2007, solidifying his image as a beloved television icon. Remembering his legacy, Ellen DeGeneres, host of the popular talk show ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ said, “Bob Barker was more than a host; he was an institution. His energy and charisma were unparalleled.” He and the show were so famous that they had been mentioned and included in an episode of the famous sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother’ as well.

While there is no official confirmation on the cause of his death, sources closely associated with his family shared that his advanced age played a factor. After the news of Barker’s death broke out, friends, fans and fellow celebrities poured in to express grief and condolences. Betty White, his close friend and fellow animal rights activist said, “Bob was a good friend who expressed intense care and love towards animals. He’ll be missed badly.” 

“The man. The myth. The best. Loved him kicking the crap out of him. He will be missed by everyone I know. My love goes out to Barb and his family. Thank you for everything, Barb!”, tweeted Adam Sandler on Twitter. Sandler shared a memorable scene with Barker in his golf comedy movie “Happy Gilmore.
