On Tuesday, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) said that his country’s investigation into the contentious gold smuggling issue has enlisted the assistance of China, India, and Interpol.
Prachanda repeatedly accused corruption against the main opposition and its leader, K. P. Oli, during his two-hour press conference… “Why is the opposition not cooperating with the government in the probe instead obstructing parliament, which has to pass many important legislations?” he questioned.
On July 19, 100 kilograms of gold were seized by Nepal’s Revenue Investigation Department after being authorized by the customs division at the international airport. According to the inquiry, the package came from China (Hong Kong) and went all the way to Delhi.
Dahal said that his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other ministers during his visit to Delhi in June was a historic success. He said that India had consented to resolve the border conflict and buy 10,000 MW of electricity from Nepal.
According to Dahal, Nepal, and China will sign agreements to build two transmission lines along their shared border. Starting on September 23, Dahal will visit China for three days. On September 21, he will address the UN General Assembly in New York, and he is planning to fly directly from New York to Beijing.
Previously, on July 29, 2023, the customs office of Nepal requested help from Hong Kong customs in addressing a 100-kilogram gold smuggling case. Before being arrested on July 19, 2023, the firm imported a similar package numerous times, according to records from the Nepalese customs department. The information shows that before July 19 there were at least 1,997 kilograms worth of imports from Hong Kong.
