OpenAI is investigating and working on curating consumer health products, and the most attractive part of this is the inclusion of an one-of-a-kind generative AI-driven personal health assistant, which will serve as the core component and its main strategy will be to broaden its existing range of tools such as ChatGPT. This initiative, as reported by Business Insider and taken from insights that were provided by trustworthy sources about this inclusion, implies that the company intends to amalgamate its sophisticated AI driven technology into the healthcare sector, and provide its users with specialised assistance and one-on-one support in managing various components linked to their health and wellness.

Recently at the HLTH conference which took place around October this year, Gross disclosed that ChatGPT currently has over 800 million active users who use the software weekly, and among whom, a considerable number of these people have been utilizing this AI tool for medical information, guidance and sometimes even suggestions. This rising trend widely underscores the need for such a tool which can potentially help  the growing public interest in leveraging artificial intelligence to address personal health issues and conditions.

Meanwhile, prominent technology firms like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have invested years of efforts and direct finances to provide consumers with greater control over their health and medical data, albeit with varying degrees of success. For instance, Google has stopped the functioning of its health record platform since 2011 due to insufficient user engagement and interaction. And in the same manner, Amazon encountered challenges and ceased its Halo fitness tracker business operation in 2023.

Microsoft also faced several difficulties in achieving widespread adoption of its HealthVault platform, which was then ultimately shut down. These previous endeavors give prominence to one factor, and it is the challenges that even major tech companies have faced in effectively integrating AI technology and other similar such health tools with personal health management, a situation that OpenAI may now be looking to transform with its innovative AI-driven initiatives.
