Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during their Sunday, September 22, 2024 conversation in the US. His statements underlined India’s support for the region’s peace and stability.
“I had a meeting in New York with President Mahmoud Abbas. reiterated that India is in favor of the quick restoration of stability and peace in the region. examined methods to strengthen our long-lasting friendship with the Palestinian people.” Modi wrote in a post on X.
PM Narendra Modi is currently in New York. He met with the head of state on Sunday, away from the UN General Assembly.
“PM Modi expressed deep concern at the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reiterated India’s continued support to the people of Palestine,” a Ministry of External Affairs spokeswoman, Randhir Jaiswal, said in a post on X afterward.
PM Narendra Modi is in the United States for a three-day official visit.
On Saturday, he left for New York, having attended the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware. At the ‘Modi&US’ massive community event in Long Island on Sunday afternoon, he spoke to thousands of Indian-American enthusiasts.
Israel’s strike on Gaza
Israel attacked Hamas after the terror incident on October 7 that put the region in a state of humanitarian crisis.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that between October 7, 2023, and September 16 of this year, at least 41,226 Palestinians have been killed and 95,413 have been injured, based on estimates given by the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
Furthermore, during this period, 1,542 Israelis and foreigners have died. On October 7, Hamas killed most of them.
The position of India regarding Palestine
India supports an end to the Israel-Palestine conflict through peaceful means. According to New Delhi, an agreement reached through talks and a two-state solution will result in long-lasting peace.
Modi meets with the leaders of Nepal and Kuwait
PM had discussions with Nepal’s prime minister, K P Sharma Oli, on Sunday. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that they discussed a wide range of subjects, such as improving connectivity, promoting interpersonal ties, and collaborating on hydropower projects.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister met for the first time with Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of Kuwait.
The conference report provided by the MEA states that “they noted with satisfaction that the two countries were supporting each other with energy and food security requirements.”
