On the occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti, Prime-Minister Narendra Modi launched the 13000 crore Vishwakarma Yojana which is set to provide due recognition to the artisans and craftsperson of the country through certificates and ID cards, credit facilities, and various incentives as well.

At the India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka, New Delhi, PM Modi launched the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, which was first announced during his address to the nation on the 77th Independence Day celebration. Under this scheme the artisans will be provided with various facilities and also recognition for their contribution in promoting India’s rich art and handicrafts culture.

The facilities include financial support through mortgage free loan support to the artisans up to an amount of 1 Lakh in the first tranche and around 2 Lakhs for the second one at a rate of 5 percent per annum. Various incentives for digital transactions, advanced toolkits and marketing support will be availed to the artisans as well.

Since the scheme covers 18 focused areas of concerns for the artisans all across India, it will also be aiding their overall development in society, rather than just financial issues. Therefore, small scale craftspersons will be provided with both basic and advanced skills training and upgradation in skills as well. Proper recognition will be given to them through Vishwakarma certificates and ID cards for their endowment of Indian art and culture. Hence, the scheme aims at the overall well being and growth of the artisan communities.

During the launch of this scheme, PM Modi also dedicated the Phase-1 of the IICC, known as Yashobhoomi, to the “Vishwakarmas” of the country. Vishwakarma in Hindu lore is the craftsmen deity and a divine architect. Hence, this scheme was launched on his day of veneration, and all the craftspersons belonging to the OBC (Other Backward Classes ) community were bestowed with this revered name by the Prime Minister.

Apart from traditional artisans, this scheme also includes barbers, laundry workers and even blacksmiths as the benefactors. Therefore, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana has set the goal of aiding over 30 Lakhs families.
