On International Women’s Day, the Indian Railways operated Vande Bharat Express with an all women crew for the first time ever and created a history. The journey started from CSMT – Sainagar Shirdi Vande Bharat Express departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 6:20 am.
Surekha Yadav, Asia’s first female loco pilot, piloted the train along with assistant loco pilot Sangeeta Kumari. All the operations of the train was also overviewed by Shweta Ghone.
A completely dedicated team of women Travelling Ticket Examiners were installed, including head ticket examiners, Anushka KP and MJ Rajput, along with senior ticket examiners Sarika Ojha, Suvarna Pashte, Kavita Maral, and Manisha Ram.
From the loco pilot to on boarding catering staff, every aspect and part of the journey was managed by women. This initiative marks as a historic moment as it does not only celebrates the strength, dedication and leadership of women in Indian Railways but also it sets a huge impact and an example for a better gender representation in the sector.
This initiative has been highlighted by the railway officers as it aligns with a broader approach of Indian Railways to empower women and to create more such employment opportunities.
The Vande Bharat Express as predominantly known for its speed, efficiency and modern amenities, has transformed the rail travel and service in India. Now, this historic journey on International Women’s Day it further marks the progress that has been made in breaking gender barriers in traditionally a male dominated field.
