Two new resolutions brought in the United Nations General Assembly on the third anniversary of the Russia and Ukraine War proposed by the United States and by Ukraine and Europe. However, India withdrew from voting on both. Both the resolutions were taken into consideration by the UN as they aimed to restore the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
The voting for the suggestion of resolutions by the US, which proposed an immediate end of the conflict between the two countries, was way too hefty as the US itself refused to vote on the suggestion that it brought.
This step was taken by the US because some of the European countries successfully managed to bring about amendments in the text. In this context, India acts as a country that maintains the status that it is not neutral but stands on the side of peace. India was certainly expected to vote in favour of this resolution but the amendments implied that India too would abstain from voting.
However this stance wasn’t something that India took alone, as it was one of the 65 countries that withdrew from voting for this resolution, all in response to the amendments. They abstained from voting on the amendments backed by Europe, a resolution that called for sovereignty and peace while mentioning the immediate removal of Russian forces from Ukraine.
Officially, India continues to maintain its image that it wants both the parties to restart their diplomatic process and better their dialogue to resolve the conflict.
Despite their defeat in the United Nations General Assembly, the US surely made up for in the Security Council with the hope that both France and the UK will not veto it. Both the nations are yet to imply their veto power in this context, in fact they haven’t used it for decades.
The US resolution, in its explanation of a paragraph, seeks to implement long lasting peace and prosperity and calls to quickly end the war between the two countries.
